Cuba Beyond the Surface: A Traveler's Reflection on History and Humanity
Cuba is an island country located in the Caribbean Sea. It is a multi ethnic country whose people, culture and origins are geographically diverse. While widely known for their tobacco and coffee, Cuba has much more to offer visitors. Come along with us in our journey to Cubs.
Our first day in Cuba began with a visit to Revolution Square. We then had a delicious lunch at La Reserva Vedado accompanied by a tour of their boutique hotel. We then checked into our hotel, Gran Manzana Kempinski, before dinner at Ivan Chefs Justo, which featured a private rum tasting and cigar pairing lesson by a master sommelier from Havana Club Rum.
Day 2 began with a walking tour of La Habana Vieja, the traditional center of Havana's commerce, industry, and entertainment. We learned about the history of Cuba. We then visited El Taller Experimental de Grafica to see art from local artists and Bodeguita del Medio, the birthplace of the mojito. And yes, the mojito was good!
After a very insightful conversation with the former Cuba Press and Cultural Attache at 5 Sentidos and a fun salsa lesson, we closed out the day with dinner at Antojos and drinks at El Floridita, the birthplace of the Daiquiri and the preferred hangout spot for Ernest Hemiway.
Day 3 started out with a tour of the Kempinski Manzana hotel's basement gallery, which still has a piece of the original Wall of Havana, built in the 17th Century.
We then went to the oldest cigar factory, where they make Romeo y Julieta, Chobia, and Montecristo, and watched the workers make the different cigars.
The next stop was to Fusterlandia, the Gaudi inspired neighborhood mosaic tile project of world renowned artist Jose Fuster.
Afterward, we were given a special performance by the Habana Compas Dance group. Dance moves are influenced by their Spanish, African, and native heritage. This was so amazing and emotional. What a special and talented group of artists!
Wrapping up day 3 with dinner at El Cocinero with the team and then a visit to Fabrica de Art. A multi-faceted venue built into a former cooking oil factory. This venue, which was created by hip hop artist X-Alfonso, features art installations, live music, pop-up fashion stalls, performance art, Indy cinema, and supports many local entrepreneurs. This is a must visit!
Day 4 - Our last full day in Cuba started out with a very moving visit to the Congregacion de Hermanas del Amore de Dios, where we met with one of the Sisters. She shared with us the amazing work that they do despite the huge challenges they face every day. The work of God is very powerful!
We then went for a Cuban cuisine lesson at Ajiaco Cafe. We first toured their farm where they grow their own herbs and ingredients, then had a cooking lesson where we prepared lobster and lamb followed by a mixology class making their version of the Mojito. They make the best Mojito I have ever had!
Day 4 wrapped up with a Classic Car Photoshoot and a car parade down Paseo de Marti ending at the Hotel Nacional de Cuba.
I have been asked several times upon my return back home to describe this experience and at first I really struggled to find the words to adequately convey my feelings. After some deep thought the word “moving” kept returning to me. While I have been fortunate enough to travel the world, I have never had a moving experience like this before. The Cuban people have so much to give this world if we give them an opportunity. They want us to visit them so that they can share their story and culture. I hope you take the opportunity to do so.
